Sotheby's is a British-founded auction house which, for two centuries, established strong growth in the UK. Founded 11 March 1744 by Samuel Baker, a bookseller. Seventeen seventy-eight after Baker's death, john Sotheby inherited the business. In 1964 Sotheby's purchased Parke-Bernet at the time, one of the largest auctioneers in the united states, and moved its location to Madison Avenue Transeded to Sotheby Parke-Bernet for a time. Christie's and Sotheby auction houses became fierce rivals throughout the 20th Century.
