Sharks | Megalodon | Otodus

Megalodon the king and terror of the Cenozoic oceans may have been edged into extinction by one of the most docile mammals on the planet.

New Scientist magazine establishes Megalodon was an ancient whale killer, dating back to the Oligocene and Pliocene epoch, 28,000,000 to 2,600,000 years ago. A run of 25,400,000 years, a king in the ocean before unravelling their lineage it kept for millions of years.

Genus: Carcharodon. (Family; Lamnidae / Otodontidae). (Order; Lamniformes).
Age: Cenozoic, Oligocene to early Pleistocene, 28,000,000 to 1,500,000 years.
Origin: Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA.
Stats: 50 tonnes, 60 foot long, 10-foot jaw, a prehistoric monster.

The Otodus obliquus was a large Macro-predatory shark with record-breaking teeth measuring 10.4 cm, growing to a length of 39 feet, hunting smaller marine mammals, including sharks.

Palaeontologists theorise the Otodus ancestry connects to the great Megalodon from the Miocene era which evolved for 30,000,000 to 40,000,000 years and only now in their void, we are witness to one of many spectacular modern sharks, the Great White, the lineage of Carcharocles as we know it today.

Genus: Otodus obliquus. Ancient Macro, Mackerel Shark.
Age: Moyen, Atlas Mountain Range, Morocco, North Africa.
Origin: Late Palaeocene, Eocene, 60,000,000 - 40,000,000 years.
