Details

Walliserops trifurcatus trilobite double specimen, now cleaned and conserved, the overburden of solid limestone rock removed, the specimens cleaned with an air-abrasive technique and so in this way of extensive preparation work the once extant arthropods have been brought back in a still life pose. Displaying the familiar morphology of their once animate carapaces, the distinctive feature of this genus of trilobite is the three pronged trident. The prong fork like structure erupting forth from the glabella (head shield) and as yet the appendage has no known use. The thoracic segments are clearly determinable and the pygidium (tail) is intact.

Trident Walliserops Trifurcatus. The amazing trident, could it be a sensory organ or sexual display appendage, the exact use is not determined yet, however the very long and pronged tridentate proboscis emanating from the head makes this little arthropod very unique in its class. Found in the Palaeozoic era, Devonian period 417 to 354 million years ago specifically, excavated from a strata of limestone of the Emsian stage around 407 to 393 million years ago, the location of the find is Timrhanrhart Formation, Foum Zguid, Morocco, North Africa.
