Turquoise contrasts of an opaque, blue-to-green palette that is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminium, with the chemical formula CuAl6(PO4)4(OH) 4H2O. It is rare and valuable in this finer grade and has been prized as a gemstone and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to its unique hue.


Named from French "turques" or "turquois" meaning "Turkish" the original material found on the south slopes of the Al-Mirah-Kuh Mountains (Iran), but which found its way to Europe via Turkey. The name was known at least as early as the 17th cocentury C.E.
