Semi-Aquatic Lizard

Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus Toe Claw 243mm

ENQUIRE

An exquisite Spinosaurus aegyptiacus toe claw measuring 243mm on the beautifully curated AES | BRASS stand. The toe claw and two associated phalanges have been expertly preserved, now displaying an attractive white fossil bone that incorperates the bone tissue throughout, excavated from the sites of 'De Ksar-es-Souk' the classic 'Kem Kem deposits' within the Western Desert of Morocco in North Africa.

This rare discovery displays an authentic aesthetic, representing that of the original article, without morphology, disfiguration or impressions of plate movement within the earth's surface, further helping to secure this one of a kind specimen that resembles what was once part of a feared prehistoric aquatic lizard.

The white fossilised bone tissue remarkably striking and attractive. Professionally air abraded using the latest compressed air systemised precision tools. Removing consolidates, cyanoacrylate adhesives, and other prior repairs carried out with brevity in the field. Excavators and museum palaeontologists use specific methods to strengthen and reinforce fossil dinosaur bones to aid removal and transportation to the laboratories for later careful conservation.

The delicate dinosaur fossil now conserved and mounted, enabling a good view of the claw, the distal and proximal phalanxes and particularly the blood vessels, anteriorly revealed.

Discovering fossils of this quality in this region is an infrequent occurrence. And a very exacting and lengthy process, which requires very expert knowledge of the terrain of the western desert and considerable technical skill when excavating any finds. If not carried out in a proper fashion fossil can become severely damaged or even destroyed.

We now know so much more about Spinosaurus, it had a semi-aquatic lifestyle seeking out large shark type vertebrates like the Pristis sawfish. The sawfish had many razor-sharp piercing teeth along its rostral protuberance emanating from its head. The rostrums were similar to modern-day narrow snout sawfish.

Spinosaurus at over 50 feet long would hunt Pristis shark-like fish, which grew to over 20 feet long. The fish-eating dinosaur would bite down while using its tremendously powerful feet and hand claws to grapple, slash and rip the fish apart.

The specimen collected some years ago in the continental Red bed fossil formation, of the Continental intercalaire, at Tegana Kem Kem, in the province of de Kasr-es-Souk. The fossil bed is located in the western Moroccan desert. This area is the northern Sahara, of greater Africa. The Hamada, a raised plateau, is a distinct topographical feature of the region.

Recently In the region, the localised politico-geographical position has been evolving; The two main protagonist-states are militarily active, in a dispute over borders of once accessible Sahara. This Military action in the region makes collecting a fraught business. It is now causing an unsettled situation for the indigenous populous, including the Berber fossil collectors along their once productive fossil beds.

Currently, the best fossils are becoming more desirable and of course, more valuable. Older tailings are being re-excavated in the hope fossils will be found. This environment, coupled with the re-working of the only specifically accessible beds, is leading to a concern that the grounds will eventually be extinguished of dinosaur fossils altogether.
