Crotalocephalina - Superfamily Cheiruroidea

Crotalocephalus Gibbus 101mm

£432.00 GBP RRP £462.00 GBP

Crotalocephalina Crotalocephalus gibbus trilobite measuring 101mm, originating from North Africa, dating back to the Palaeozoic era, Early Devonian period, Pragian stage 411 to 408 million years ago. The order and type of this Devonian trilobite. Order of Phylum Arthropoda, Class trilobita Order Phacopida, Cheiruridae (SALTER, 1864 Phacopida Cheirurina), Superfamily Cheiruroidea Family Cheiruridae, Genus Crotalocephalina (Crotalocephalus) gibbus Beyrich, c1845.

Evolving with noticeably deep furrows diagonally crossing the glabella, the comparatively small protruding convex eyes could suggest low level or partial sight. Some genera of trilobites did become progressively less sightful or evolved to become total sightless, the theory suggests these types were more sedate in their foraging, silt sifters rather than predator types of trilobites, or even like sightless deepwater sharks of today deep-sea dwellers in environments of no light.

This genera Crotalocephalina Crotalocephalus gibbus with a nose which to the author likens to a great sperm whale. Along with fine thoracic segments ending laterally each with a spine or pointed termination makes this fossilised arthropod very identifiable as Crotalocephalina Crotalocephalus gibbus. The trilobite has been worked out of the matrix which once held it prisoner for millions of years and has been completely transformed free as if in the ancient Devonian seabed once again. The pygidium spines complete as are the two glabella cheek spines, attached to the cephalon or head shield, all these points make for a very good specimen fossilised trilobite exoskeleton or carapace.

Our Devonian trilobites are collected in the field by our associates in North Africa and prepared by technicians in the Moroccan fossil Lab. We, therefore, have a historical link to our fossil diggers and our specimens enabling us to authenticate and guarantee all our trilobites. The preparator of the trilobite is one of a dedicated Moroccan team, the trilobite was personally hand-collected by the technician from the fossil bed and with the aid of the latest techniques presented for a collection display. We guarantee the authenticity and quality with all our specimens this Crotalocephalina Crotalocephalus gibbus fossil arthropod trilobite is no exception to our guarantee's. It can require many diligent hours and patient concentration with pneumatic pens and miniature abrasive tools driven by compressors to perfectly clean the limestone bedrock away from the fossil carapace or exoskeleton of the fossil trilobites without causing damage to the fossil itself, this is highly skilled work in a lab or dedicated fossil workshop.
