Ichthyodectid - Cladocyclus Agassiz

Cladocyclus Pankowskii Jaw 80mm

£262.00 GBP

Cladocyclus pankowskii fish Jaw measuring 80mm with partial teeth within the original sockets. This new species of Cladocyclus, Teleostei; Icthyodenctiformes, from the Cenomanian from Morocco still has intact the left denture with partial dentition within the jaw, these are the partial remains of a Cretaceous fish and a rare find, often mistaken for Pterosaur or other prehistoric bird jaws. Recently fully described as a Cretaceous fish Cladocyclus, often found in the fossil Santana horizons of Brazil and in recent times has found its way to science laboratories from fresh excavations in Morocco. Often these finds are surface found as much as excavated, eroded out of the fossil layers of red sandstone and are therefore collected without notes to the original location to the rock strata which was once thought to be a delta system. This area is now part of the Northern Sahara desert of North Africa.

The condition of the slight jaw and intact teeth is quite remarkable and of a great scientific study interest. The deep reddish tones are typical of the fossil deposit. There appear to be signs of predation or attack, small indentations to the surface of the jaw bone itself. Some teeth to the central part of the left jaw bone are quite robust and the other teeth are slight in comparison, these can be seen in our illustrations above. Each tooth set firmly into the sockets, not reset, as is often the case, all too often using pterosaur teeth. If a fish jaw is found the Moroccan fossil hunter will stick in place pterosaur teeth in error, this, however, is quite the genuine, as found condition, article and is, therefore, quite an important little fish jaw for any collector of this region or fossil fish collector.
