Choffaticeras Ammonite 200mm

£142.00 GBP

Excellent sliced and polished Choffaticeras (C.) segne fossil ammonoid, the type described by Solger in 1903. The ammonite halved enabling the internal chambers now filled with mineral calcite, a type of quartz, to be fully appreciated. A natural history curio which has also scientific interest, discovered in what has become a classic Cretaceous period fossil layer located in the high Atlas of southern Morocco.

The ammonite has been cut into to opposing matched halves and polished to reveal the internal anatomy of the umbilicus (shell), once the extant cephalopods protective chitin phragmacone. This revealed the interesting mineral infiltration of mainly calcite, which is a type of quartz, the chamber divisions picked out in lighter colour mineral while the chambers exhibit a darker brown mineral colour. Supplied with two lucite stands for display and with a certificate with location of find details and signed authenticity of genuineness.

In the southern High Atlas mountains of Morocco a small enclave Goulmima which originated as a Ksar and once an important city in the region of Errachidia has once again undergone a revival of re-growth In recent years. The fossil community has also had success in unearthing large numbers of Early Turonian ammonites from the Cretaceous escarpment to the north of Goulmima. A section measured northeast of the village of Asfla sets the ammonites in stratigraphic context. The fauna belongs to the widely recognised upper lower Turonian Mammites nodosoides Zone, and comprises Romaniceras (Yubariceras) reymenti (COLLIGNON, 1967), Mammites nodosoides (SCHLÜTER, 1871), Nannovascoceras intermedium RENZ & ALVAREZ, 1979, Fagesia peroni PERVINQUIÈRE, 1907, Neoptychites cephalotus (COURTILLER, 1860), Neoptychites aff. hottingeri COLLIGNON, 1967, Choffaticeras (Choffaticeras) segne (SOLGER,1903) and Wrightoceras munieri (PERVINQUIÈRE, 1907).

On a geographical and historical note Goulmima (arabisation of the amazigh word Iguelmimene - the lakes), is a berber city in the region of Meknès-Tafilalet. Now an agricultural oasis fed by the Wadi Gheri, which issues from the central High Atlas. Like similar settlements in Tafilalet region, it was originally built as a fortified village Ksar (fort). A very strategic and important Ighrem n'Igoulmimen (Ksar Goulmima), which is now in the process of restoration. Not just as a historical site. A revitalised community of several hundred people still live in the Ksar.
