Polished Goniatite Ammonoid 355mm

Availability:In stock

Completely nature made, this wonderful example of a specimen goniatite is part of the cephalopoda group, a distant relative of nautili, octopi and modern squids, an ammonoid which is also a mollusc, this is the result of 400 million years of deposition and fossilisation, which has preserved the outer shell of the mollusc. The goniatite once had tentacles like a cuttle fish which it would use to grapple prey to force down into its mouth and eat with a horn beak like structure in its mouth much like a modern day squid. An extremely beautiful polished goniatite ammonoid, also extraordinary for it's quality at such a size. This fossil ammonoid images speak volumes, a delightful specimen. The sediments of time have created distinctive linear calcite definition of the inner shell morphology, this from the fossil bed. Once collected the goniatite has been patiently polished to reveal the inner ceratitic chambers. A unique occurrence which has also been highlighted through the fossil preparation process, that of the smaller calcified goniatite specimen captured within the last living chamber of this host shell.
