HARPOCERAS AMMONITE DISCOVERY

In Holzmaden southern Germany the discovery of the Posidonia fossil shales led to the naturally created wall interior decor hanging plates. These dramatic display plates consist of exquisite forms of ancient life which once swam through the Jurassic ocean know as the Tethys ocean. The story only started there 180 million years ago. As these marine reptiles, ammonoids and crustaceans died, their body parts formed part of a great oil shale sheet of gold picked out in marine life on soft black decorative shale. Full of intriguing prehistoric fossil shells; read the rest of this chaotic and enigmatic story of prehistory below and learn where you can find a unique and decorative work from mother nature's art store.

GOLD ON BLACK

The presence of iron pyrite 'fools gold', in the Posidonia black ‘jet’ shales is an event created by the historic anoxic environment of the sea floor. Because the benthic level of the sea lacked a concentration of oxygen the biota of the oceans once deposited, the post-mortem on the seafloor did not decay quickly, oxygen-loving bacteria did not form and decay the tissue of sea creatures like the Ammonites. Disc-like pyrite nodules indicate the anoxic environment of the Jurassic seas in this location. Low oxygen loving Algae formed in place of bacteria and produced sulphates which released hydrogen sulphates as a by-product. The further bacterial breakdown released sulphur which combined with iron minerals to form iron pyrite.

HOLZMADEN GERMANY

Holzmaden, Baden-Württemberg, lies near Stuttgart in southwestern Germany. It is noted for the European oil shales deposited on a sea floor during the Early Toarcian. Formations of finely laminated layers of oil shales and finely grained sediments intercalated with bituminous limestones, these are the Lagerstä then or Posidonia Shale (Posidonienschiefer) and named after the ubiquitous fossils of Posidonia bronni that characterize its fauna. The Posidonia Shale out-crops in some locations in southwestern Germany, and in many layers near the village of Holzmaden where it was mined for bituminous shales for the production of electricity and cement.

Genus: Cephalopoda, Order Ammonitida, Family Hildoceratidae and Dactylioceras commune. maghrebiana side-neck turtle.

Geological Age: Palaeozoic era, Lower Jurassic period, Toarcian stage, approximately 180 million years.

Geological Origin: Holzmaden, Posidonia formation, Lagerstätten oil shales, South West Germany.

FOSSIL DEPOSITION HISTORY

The Posidonia shales of the Jurassic (Toarcian stage approximately180 million years ago) period. Formed part of the ancient Tethys Ocean and the deposition of sediments creating the oil shales and the fossils therein which were deposited and fossilised in an anoxic (lacking in oxygen) deepwater environment. These shales contain rare fossil animals of the Jurassic period. Marine vertebrates, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, ammonites (go to our ammonite pages) and crinoids ( review our crinoids pages). The Holzmaden (Posidonia shale deposits) are of worldwide importance not only because of the unique formation, but the discovery of skin cover found and illustrating parts of fossilised fauna rarely seen in the palaeontological record. Few locations have such an environment which so finely preserved its fossil treasures. Review the Posidonia Shale fossils at the Museum Hauff, Holzmaden, as well as museums around the world or our store online at thefossilstore.com.

INTERIOR DECORATION

Fossil crinoids of the Poseidon shales have exhibited by the fossil store in exhibitions around Britain created excellent features, the crisp detail of feathery floret arms, golden hues of ‘ fools gold’ in the form of iron pyrite set contrastingly against black to very dark grey Holzmaden shale is delightful. These plates now a premier fossil decor feature are becoming increasingly more uncommon. The time is nigh for the collection of ammonoid plates from the Poseidon stable. The naturally formed and tactile shale containing shellfish of the Jurassic have arrived on the fossil interior scene. The striking complete phragmacone's (shells) of the enormous pelagic ocean molluscs are preserved and conserved beautifully in plate issues. The plates can be hung to create an accompaniment to or an alternative of the sea lilies of the Poseidon theme. We can form and supply from sublime fossil mountings an accent to match your interior. CLOSE UP

The fauna of the Posidonia shales forms a myriad of Jurassic marine life of the Toarcian stage, at this point approximately one hundred and eighth million years ago the seas teemed with large vertebrate reptiles chasing prey. Among the victims of ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs flying reptiles, the pterosaurs glided over the surface of the waters hopeful of a meal. Below through the water column pelagic cephalopods hunted over swimming or floating crinoids, a sub-lifeform of the plant looking filter-feeding animal with grasping arms covered in Filia, reminiscent of terrestrial long stemmed ferns and so commonly referred to as a fossil sea lily. Below these at benthic levels crustaceans eked out an existence foraging early forms of worms which would burrow through the low oxygenated sediments. Among these groups the ammonoids were prolific, this is evident in the fossil shales, as rare as the ancient fossils in the limited depositional layers around Holzmaden are the huge shelled molluscs are represented in the fossil layers in glorious detail and number.

DISPLAY

Finally, in this section, we turn to display and conservation of the fossil plates. If one wished to exhibit, hang or feature one of these fossil plates we at the fossil store.com can create a hanging frame or stand to suit your living space, venue or theme. Mounting and wall hanging can is achievable in several ways, refer to our classic range of mounted fossils, from our website menu > interiors > ammonites on bases or > statements, sections. Here you will discover mounts of bronze. We can also create lucite (clear acrylic or perspex) chrome, silvered, brass or black ebonised types. For more information on mounting these specimens contacts us, for all our contact information you may go to our website contact page.
