The Pyrite sphere 65mm exhibiting excellent gold colour and natural sheen within the cavities, the outer round spherical form is polished, the metallic lustre with a mirror-like finish. Such Auriferous Pyrite is a valuable ore of gold. Pyrite naturally crystallises in cube form and can date back to the Mesozoic era, late Jurassic, approximately 120 million years.

Deposits of Iron Pyrite from the Huaron Mining District, the Quiruvilca Mine, La Libertad and the Huanzala, Huánuco, all Peruvian localities produce fine smaller sized crystals as in the sphere featured here.

Named from the Greek "pyr" for "fire", Used in antiquity for fire lighting, sparks flew from it when struck with another harder mineral or metal. Known to Dioscorides (~50 CE) under the name "περι υληζ ιατρικηζ" which included both pyrite and chalcopyrite. (Note information; Courtesy of Mindat)
