Crotalocephalus Gibbus Trilobite 101mm, professionally prepared the matrix (fossil bedrock layer), having been removed from the sedimentary rock of the once fossil bed, thus revealing the prehistoric arthropods exoskeleton, this fossil arthropod was part of the invertebrate group. The naturally contemporaneous Devonian limestone silt may have been this individuals demise. It is believed underwater landslips were commonly caused and that many trilobites were suddenly caught in and covered over being trapped in the anoxic silt, victims of an anaerobic environment, the lack of oxygen not beneficial for life, was beneficial for the process of quickly and successful fossilisation, aiding petrification and retarding bacterial growth. So that the animals body parts were preserved. Genus: Crotalocephalus Gibbus. (Crotalocephalina). Age: Palaeozoic era,Early Devonian period, Pragian stage 411 to 408 million years ago. Behind the cephalon shield protrude long glabella genal or cheek spines again these covered with many tubercules. A single thoracic spine longer again than its whole body length stretches from axial lobe or mid thorax lobe (segment L6), the sixth segment post the cephalon, this extends towards and over the pygidium (tail shield). The genal glabella spines are finely tapered and very long, these attached to the glabella lateral border field, resemble another trilobites diadem or semi circular coronet form of crown around the glabella border, the Diademaproetus's. However the Cyphaspis here having a more elongated genal cheek spine. The specimen is exceedingly good and fine. Painstakingly cleaned and removed from the matrix, or fossil bedrock. A remarkably well preserved fossil arthropod displaying excellent preparation and conservation which enables us a glimpse back in time to the Devonian era, and into the life of this particular arthropod, invertebrate trilobites which once proliferated the sea's 400 million years ago. Some were free swimmers, most lived solely on the sea bottom, with appendages and spines which were for defence. The bottom of murky sea's could have been a very poorly lit place, disturbed by the multitude of foraging marine life.
