Details:

This Diademaproetus antatlasius trilobite 31mm has been prepared using pneumatic tools, finished with an air abrasive micro sand-blaster in a fossil Lab. The Trilobite is a Devonian period fossil arthropod, part of the invertebrate group. This uncommon genus of trilobite is known for its long genal cheek spines and semi circular (cephalon) head shield. A short rostrum (nose) and large defined thoracic segments. The naming of the genus Diadema suggests similarity to the head shield of a coronet crown shape, the coronet being the slim demi lune type of crown, the cephalon lateral border in this genus is likened to this. The specimen trilobite has been prepared to expose the exoskeleton (fossilised carapace), on its original matrix which is the bedrock.

Details

Diademaproetus antatlasiusi trilobite 31mm dating back to the middle part of the Devonian period, approximately 393 to 383 million years ago, the Eifian and Givetian stages of the greater Devonian period which lasted from 417 to 354 mya. Discovered in the fossil beds of Djebel Oufaten, Alnif, Morocco in North Africa.

Diademaproetus antatlasiusi is part of the Phylum Arthropoda, Class Trilobita, Order Proetida, Family Proetidae Salter, 1843, the family of Proetidae evolved in the Ordovician Period which was between 485 to 444 mya. This family of invertebrates survived several extinctions up to the Permian period between 299 to 262 mya.

A brief trilobite history. The order or group of trilobites evolved during the Pre-Cambrian period approximately 550 million years ago, One of the most complex forms of early life, the trilobites reign lasted over 270 million years coming to an end around 250 million years ago in the time of the Permian period. Trilobite genus-types were diverse and globally extensive. The Trilobite was a member of the Proetida Order, Family of the Proetidae. Trilobites were complex animals, having the first compound eyes and segmented bodies which enabled them to enrolled, possibly for a defence posture.

The name trilobite refers to the three part body shape, this is longitudinally referenced to the tri-lobed effect of the whole arthropod and not, as often is the case, mistaken for the three main and distinctive constituent parts of the carapace, the cephalon (head), the thorax (body) and the pygidium (tail).

The geographical location of this find was Djebel Oufaten, Alnif , Morocco, North Africa. The geological age, the Paleozoic Era, of the Devonian Period, around 405 - 380 million years ago.
