Crotalocephalus Gibbus Trilobite 101mm, professionally prepared the matrix (fossil bedrock layer), having been removed from the sedimentary rock of the once fossil bed, thus revealing the prehistoric arthropods exoskeleton, this fossil arthropod was part of the invertebrate group. The naturally contemporaneous Devonian limestone silt may have been this individuals demise. It is believed underwater landslips were commonly caused and that many trilobites were suddenly caught in and covered over being trapped in the anoxic silt, victims of an anaerobic environment, the lack of oxygen not beneficial for life, was beneficial for the process of quickly and successful fossilisation, aiding petrification and retarding bacterial growth. So that the animals body parts were preserved.

Crotalocephalina Crotalocephalus gibbus trilobite 101mm, A fine fossilised trilobite arthropod Originating from North Africa, dating back to the Palaeozoic era, Early Devonian period, Pragian stage 411 to 408 million years ago. The order and type of this Devonian trilobite. Order of Phylum Arthropoda, Class trilobita Order Phacopida, Cheiruridae (SALTER, 1864 Phacopida Cheirurina), Super family Cheiruroidea Family Cheiruridae, Genus Crotalocephalina (Crotalocephalus) gibbus Beyrich, c1845.

The genus evolved with noticeably deep furrows diagonally crossing the glabella, the comparatively small protruding convex eyes could suggest low level or partial sight. Some genera of trilobites did become progressively less sightful or evolved to become total sightless, the theory suggests these types were more sedate in their foraging, silt sifters rather than predator types of trilobites, or even like sightless deep water sharks of today deep sea dwellers in environments of no light.

This genera Crotalocephalina Crotalocephalus gibbus with a nose which to the author likens to a great sperm whale. Along with fine thoracic segments ending laterally each with a spine or pointed termination makes this fossilised arthropod very identifiable as Crotalocephalina Crotalocephalus gibbus. The trilobite has been worked out of the matrix which once held it prisoner for millions of years and has been completely transformed free as if in the ancient Devonian seabed once again.
