Coltraneia oufatenensis trilobite 56mm dating from the Palaeozoic era, early Devonian era, Upper Lochkovian age, approximately 419 millions years. Originating from El Otfal formation, Jbel Oufatène, Morocco in North Africa. The compound eye of Coltraneia oufatenensis trilobite makes this type quite recognisable, as it is closely related to another trilobite the Treveropyge from which it differs by having larger eyes and more photoreceptor compound lenses or ommatidia. All phacopina trilobites had schizochroal eyes, these were an arrangement of compound lenses made from calcite. In this specimen Coltraneia oufatenensis trilobite the eyes can be clearly defined with their multi lens feature.

Another identifier of the Coltraneia oufatenensis are the lobes behind the glabella, the first three lobes L1,L2 and L3, L1 lobe is slightly lower as the thorax of the Coltraneia oufatenensis is slightly raised, causing L2 and L3 to be slighly higher. This leads to the thoracic segments and the terminal spines which in this specimen are all well defined down to the pygidium, tail. The trilobite has been professionally prepared to reveal it from the rock layer of the fossil bed, the fossil silts have been sculptured below the trilobite to form a pedestal from the natural and contemporary aged Devonian period limestone which did befall this individuals demise and encapsulated it for over four hundred million years. An anoxic environment is needed for the process of fossilisation to be very successful, no or little oxygen speedily aids petrification and retards bacterial growth.

This rare type Coltraneia oufatenensis trilobite is a very good example from this great Moroccan fossil site. The Order of Phacopida, Suborder Phacopina, Superfamily Acastoidea, Family Acastidae, Subfamily Asteropyginae, Genus Coltraneia oufatenensis, Lieberman & Kloc c1997.

The preparitor of this Coltraneia oufatenensis trilobite is one of our dedicated Moroccan team, the trilobite was personally hand collected by our fossil digger and technician from the fossil bed, carefully with the aid of the latest techniques cleaned for display. We guarantee authenticity and quality with all our specimens this the little Coltraneia oufatenensis arthropod trilobite is no exception to this guarantee. It requires many diligent hours and patient concentration with a pneumatic pens driven with mechanical compressors to clean limestone rock from the specimens carapace or exoskeleton without damaging the fossil arthropod. The rarity coupled with the technical skill required to extract and prepare this specimen elevates this Coltraneia oufatenensis trilobite to the upper levels of study and collecting.
