Trilobite impressions from Eons ago...

The fossil stores area’s of expertise are the deserts of the Sahara, here trilobites have a rich fossil presence, what must have been billions of marine invertebrates. From these uncounted billions few survive complete in the fossil record, finding a complete individual in a fair preserved condition is a rare event geologically speaking extremely rare. Fortunately due the environmental conditions in this part of Africa, through millennia the trilobites of the Sahara have been fortunate to survive within the fossiliferous limestones. These arthropods have close resemblance to the horse shoe crabs or kind crabs of North America and the Far East. Also likened to the common or garden woodlouse, trilobites seemed to rummage around on the sea bed hunting prey. Some developed to be large free swimmers, aggressive always on the hunt for other types of crustacean prey and their own kind, yes some even developed cannibalistic tastes. the largest trilobites were thought to be up to about one metre across.

Visit our trilobite collections online to view the wonders of our prehistorical evolution. Trilobites belong to the arthropoda group, a type of invertebrate with an hard exoskeleton, their range was global and probably from the deepest depths to the shallows of the oceans during their 300 million existence. Trilobites exoskeletons were made from a type of chitin and calcium, a compound that was very durable and could protect the soft underbelly and parts of the invertebrate. The exoskeleton had the capability to enrol and could be shed in growth, many exoskeletons are found enrolled, this could be a death posture or could equally be a shed carapace or exoskeleton.

Come visit our range of trilobites of all shapes and sizes, all natural colour tones with fine detail.
