Details

Asaphus lepidurus trilobite from St. Petersburg, Wolchow River, Russia. and date back to the Palaeozoic era, 490 to 470 million years. A superb example of this Russian classic trilobite. The Asaphus lepidurus trilobite in an excellent state of preservation, the prone carapace or exoskeleton fully inflated enabling a three dimension view of the attributes of all of the constituent body parts the glabella, head, the thorax, body and pygidium, tail, which make up this isopygous trilobite.

The Asaphus lepidurus trilobite arthropod showing very well the characteristics of this genus type. The semi circular shaped glabella and pygidium are approximately of similar size thus making this Asaphus isopygous. The thorax is noted at having eight thoracic segments with diagonal pleural furrows. The genus like other trilobites has a multi lensed compound eye, holochroal eyes. in this genus the Asaphus lepidurus trilobites eyes are quite stubby, not elongated on stalks as seen in some other types of Asaphus.

The fossilised arthropod has been prepared in such a way as to show the trilobite climbing up a rock face, the very well preserved exoskeleton cleaned of any limestone which was adhered to the exoskeleton in the fossil bed, thus enabling every detail to be observed. The fossil limestone which held the arthropod captive for millions of years now worked and etched with pneumatic pen to allow the exceptional presentation. Altogether a very collectable specimen Asaphus lepidurus trilobite from a classic trilobite lower Ordovician, the fossil Volhovian deposits, Asery level, Volkhov river, Baltic area, near St Petersburg, Russia.
