Condition report
This is an acid prep plate, therefore sympathetically exposed over a long period of time, degree by degree, the details of the once swimming fish brought to life out of the limestone rock bed. Excellent [herring family] fish, from fossil Butte formation, in terms of its size, skeletal detail [vertebrae], soft tissue [scales], and preparation. The plate now block backed [about 1.75 inch/40mm],giving a greater depth look - 'off wall' and with a convenient hanging system. Block backing
Fossil Lake History
The Green River Formation represents one of the largest documented accumulations of sedimentary rock in the world and dates back 50 million years. It covers an area of more than 25,000 square miles and averages about 2000 feet in thickness. These lakes were formed by geologic events that uplifted the Rocky Mountains in early times. The climate was much different than the desert like climate of today. It was similar to the present climate of the Mediterranean (subtropical) and more southerly climates. The first record of a fossil fish discovered in the Green River Formation was in 1856 during railroad excavations. at an altitude of 7200 ft this harsh area has been commercially mined since the late 1800s.
