Description

Set of Six Fine Petrified Fossil Wood Slices, all six Slices are cut & polished on both faces, and all six sections of the same Tree, which is incredibly Rare to source.

Exceedingly attractive group of Slices, showing an array of attractive colours, and the effects Fossilization and Petrification

Mineralisation

Petrification involves the replacement of the tissue by minerals in solution, usually silica or calcium carbonate. Re-crystallization of silica, due to pressure & heat, together with impurities in the solution, causes new forms of the mineral. It is often impossible to attribute silicified or similarly preserved woods to particular plants or trees.

All that can be said is that the wood is broadly softwood type; Silicified wood is often attractive and multi-coloured. From the Araucaria family this includes Ginkgo and Monkey Puzzle

Information

Fossil wood from the Island of Madagascar is particularly beautiful in the sense of there preserved and overall appearance, onced polished the internal body of the Tree is seen.

One of the popular, and demanding wood types/colours is known as Ikitsy Pink, dating from the Mesozoic Era and appears to be either root or vine material. Most show no cell structure but some have pockets with well-preserved cells.

Madagascar holds some of the oldest and finest Wood Specimens from the Triassic period

Many Fossil Wood specimens have been collected and placed in Museums, especially the much larger material, because it is not widely discovered any more, and obtaining such specimens is also a challenge
