Description

Exceptionally Large and Rare Seirocrinus Subangularis genus, common name sea lily .This is an amazing opportunity to acquire a rapidly diminishing fossil crinoid specimen of importance, from this classic location, specimens of this size do not come to market normally, the fossil horizons that produced this specimen are now extinct. this being from a European private collection, collected several years ago and recently cleaned and prepared in the Lab. In this example the superb dark bedrock plate enhances dramatically the delicate, Aboral cup [conical head plates], sometimes known as Calyx and the Pinnule [feathery arms or tendrils of the head]. The crown [complete head], enhanced by the bright shimmer of the Iron pyrite [fools gold]. The Iron pyrite also contributes to the superb 3D detail of the whole. this specimen is Jurassic Period approximately 170-180 mya.

history

Crinoids belong the phylum Echinodermata class [Crinoidea, which count amongst their distant relatives starfish & sea urchins], are filter feeders, sifting microscopic particles through their Pinnule/arms. Great Forests of crinoids once swayed in the ocean currents, the stems attached to the seabed as the crown rose upwards or some scientist theorise possibly floating, crown hanging downwards, attached to debris, drifting over the great oceans.

Some crinoid columns [stems], attained a great length of 50ft/15m. Germany produces some of the most attractive and desirable Crinoids; other Classic locations are China and Morocco. The three geological locations provide us with uniquely preserved and distinctly different Crinoidea. Occasionally we see ammonites attached to these plate/plaques in association of the crinoid. Also see plates-plaques of ammonites in our fossil shop pages
